Spanish & Dancing - Expressions of a Culture
Dominican Republic
Dates: every Monday; beginners groups every second Monday
Description:
"Dancing is like dreaming with your feet." Dominicans love to dance. Music is always around them, if it is at home, on the bus, in the little colmado (food store) near-by or on the street. Of all the rhythms that enriched the cultural heritage of the Dominicans, the Merengue is the most collective expression of the peoples soul. As a popular musical form, it is very dynamic and varies from one generation to the next. The program Spanish & Dancing is for all those who want to discover the Dominican attitude towards life not only through the foreign language but also through the peoples dances and music, mainly Bachata and Merengue. In the mornings, the participants tackle Spanish vocabularies, and in the afternoons, native dance instructors teach them the right steps and passionate body language of the Latin movement. The course takes place in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. With a population of more than 2.5 million inhabitants Santo Domingo is a vibrant and lively metropolis: At day it is one of the grand shopping bazaars of the Caribbean with such items as hand-wrapped cigars, jewellery made out of Larimar or Amber and other local handcrafts on sale virtually everywhere. At night the city is filled with Merengue and Bachata rhythms. No other city in the Caribbean has a greater variety of restaurants and night life. A great place to meet people and practice your newly skills in Spanish and dancing. Spanish and Dance School Spanish classes take place at the Instituto Intercultural del Caribe (IIC) in Santo Domingo. Dance lessons are held at a dance academy only a few minutes walking distance away from the school. The IIC Santo Domingo is located in the Zona Universitaria and faces the UASD, the countrys biggest and most famous university. A small garden with terraces surrounds the school, offering students a personal and friendly environment. There is plenty of opportunity to come into contact with Dominican students at any one of the various street cafes or kiosks in the area.
