Highlights:
Type of House: Country House Teaching Qualifications and Experience PGDip Ed (both 2003). Both of us have 30 years teaching experience at all age levels. We are also experienced adult educators and have worked extensively overseas. We are experienced classroom and adult educators; acknowledged as inspiring and motivational. We have a strong background in teaching English to all age groups. We have a love of out-of-the way places in New Zealand and are experienced and sensitive to working with people from other cultures. Hobbies and Interests Walking, folk music, art. Excursions and Local Attractions Waitakere Ranges (National Park), Muriwai Beach (wilderness west coast beach), Wenderholm Regional Park (beautiful beach park), Waiwera Thermal Pools, Auckland Museum and Maori Cultural Event, Crystal Mountain (gem stone display); many local vineyards. Accommodation, Facilities and Local Area We live in a 3 hectare rural property in the foothills of the scenic Waitakere Ranges, which lie North West of Auckland - New Zealand's premier city. Few major cities in the world are fortunate to have what Auckland has right on its western doorsteps: the Waitakere Ranges, a wilderness area. There are 250 kms of walking and tramping tracks, delightful waterfalls, untouched native forests, unique wildlife, gentle streams, and on the west coast, black sand beaches with some of the wildest surf to be found anywhere in the world. Although we are situated in a beautiful, secluded valley near to Swanson village, downtown Auckland is only twenty minutes drive away. Auckland can also be reached from Swanson by rail. West Coat beaches such as Karekare Beach, Bethels Beach, and Muriwai Beach are close by. These coastal areas are protected to retain their natural beauty. East coast beaches, which are more developed, are about an hours drive away. There are many vineyards in the immediate area and most have restaurants attached. There are two golf courses a few minutes drive from the house that welcome casual players. We are within walking distance of a gem-stone tourist attraction. Two thermal areas, developed for tourists, lie about one and a half hours drive to the north. Auckland is renowned as the 'City of Sails'; there are waterways, harbours and boats everywhere; the Tasman sea and the Pacific Ocean are only a couple of kilometres apart in the Auckland isthmus. The city is a vibrant, progressive place with an interesting mix of Polynesian, Asian, and European cultures. The climate is temperate to Mediterranean; even in winter, daytime temperatures rarely drop below 12º C and the summer season is long, stretching from November to April with temperatures of about 25ºC. Rainfall is high. Our home is spacious (245 sq meter), 5 bedrooms, and has an open-plan contemporary design with wide views across the surrounding farmland. The house has extensive decks and patios that enable us to enjoy outdoor living. Students-guests have an ensuite double room, which enjoys privacy, on the ground floor of the house. We (Alan & Ruth) are both very experienced educators and have travelled extensively. We lecture adults on education and have taught all ages of school students.
