Intensive English Program

Description: Become a self-confident communicator, improve your English language skills to succeed academically, professionally or for your own personal reasons. The English Language Center offers a broad range of academic and professional English language and communication programs for students worldwide.

Our ELC is located nearby downtown Baltimore, Maryland, Washington, D.C., the International Baltimore/Washington Airport and other major metropolitan cities on the East Coast such as New York City and Philadelphia.

Students interested in improving their English language skills can chose between the Intensive English Program (IEP) or Academic English courses.

The Intensive English Program offers five levels of instruction, from beginning to advance. Students receive instruction in the core language skills along with specialized communication instruction in such topics as Pronouncing American English, Vocabulary Building, Business Communication to name a few. Students are tested at the beginning and end of each course to determine their level of proficiency and readiness to progress to the next level. Students study 21 hours per week in classes of 10-15 students.

Academic English courseses provides the advanced English skills necessary to succeed in academic settings.

Students completing level four (high-intermediate) are eligible to apply for undergraduate admission at UMBC without a TOEFL score. Advanced level students an also apply to UMBC as a Special Student in order to enroll in undergraduate or graduate courses.

Intensive English Program

Highlights: The ELC is located on the UMBC campus which includes over 40 buildings, with nine, modern student residential facilities, a library tower with more than a million volumes, a new student center, state-of-the art recreational and athletic facilities and a soon to be new fine arts and humanities building.

The ELC provides many services and resources to assist students some of these include:
* Academic and Student Advisors to assist student with academic, immigration advising and day-to-day issues.
* Individualized free tutoring
*Conversatino Partner Program matching ELC students with UMBC students, staff to help improve fluency and conversation skills.
*Planned activies, events, field trips, language lab, access to all campus services, facilities and resources.
*Access to all UMBC student clubs, teams and organizations
