Summer 2008 Medical Spanish Intensive
Costa Rica
- North Western Region:
Heredia
Term: Summer
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: June 23-July 20, 2008
Description:
Based in Santa Barbara, just outside Heredia, this program combines intensive Spanish classes focusing on medical vocabulary in combination with volunteer work in a medical setting each day. The Spanish course has been carefully developed to give students the tools necessary for communicating effectively in a Spanish-speaking medical setting. Topics include common diseases, medical equipment, taking patient histories, and other topics pertinent to communicating in a medical setting. Participants meet for a total of 20 hours of class time each week.
Highlights:
Costa Rica has something for almost every traveler, from surfing and scuba diving, to hiking and exploring the interior. The terrain and eco-systems are incredibly varied and home to 6% of the Earth's biodiversity. Mountains rise from the Pacific ocean and Caribbean Sea to form the spine of Costa Rica and define hundreds of microclimates. Over 25% of the country is protected in an extensive national park and preserve system. The military was outlawed after the civil war in 1948. The absence of a military over the past 60 years has created a pacifist attitude which carries over into almost all aspects of life. Ticos (Costa Ricans) are known for being friendly, polite almost to a fault, and warm.
Qualifications:
This program is designed for pre-med students working to improve their Spanish proficiency, specifically in a medical setting. All participants must have at least basic Spanish skills and a demonstrated interest in pursuing a health focused career.
